Trump Is Not the Problem
When the rage and fear ebb, I’m able to see clearly that Trump isn’t the problem. However terrible a human being I judge him to be, he’s just a man. And, more importantly, just one man. The problem is the system that allowed Trump to have power. The fact that we’re a *kakistocracy (*government by the worst people) is a consequence of the system we’ve collectively created. The systems that interact to create the United States need changes.
When I Remember Myself as a Spiritual Being
When I remember myself as a spiritual being, it is clear that we are all suffering and trying to feel better. These moments deepen my compassion for myself and all other sentient beings. The magnitude of the suffering across the world is breathtaking and I feel enormous anger at people who harm others. I can forget myself and be filled with thoughts of rebellion and revolution. I can lose myself in thoughts about groups of people and then I remember that these are just thoughts in my head. Always, the person in front of me deserves compassion and understanding.
Courage Against Power
Feeling powerless isn’t the same thing as being powerless. Sometimes people choose that feeling over the discomfort of action.
And to be sure, action against power is dangerous and one must make their own choices about safety and the safety of their loved ones.
But change only occurs with courage and the willingness to be unsafe. Psychologically and/or physically. This is the battle raging in hearts and minds right now.
